Tamworth Mental Health Unit

Large-Scale Digital Artwork | NSW Health Infrastructure

In 2024, I was commissioned by Health Infrastructure to develop a series of large-scale graphic artworks for the new Tamworth Mental Health Unit, located on Gomeroi Country in Tamworth, NSW.

As a Gomeroi artist, this project was particularly meaningful to me. The opportunity allowed me to create artwork for a significant community facility while exploring themes of Country, connection, healing and belonging.

The artworks were developed specifically for integration throughout the building, including walls and glazing, with the aim of creating spaces that feel welcoming, culturally connected and reflective of the local environment. The project formed part of Health Infrastructure’s Arts in Health program, which recognises the role of art and storytelling in supporting positive experiences for patients, families, staff and visitors.

My creative process involved research, consultation and consideration of the architectural environment, ensuring the artworks worked cohesively within the contemporary health setting while maintaining a strong connection to local Country and culture.

The resulting works use colour, pattern, symbolism and layered visual storytelling to create moments of connection throughout the facility.

It was an honour to contribute to a project that places local Aboriginal art and storytelling within a purpose-built mental health environment, creating a lasting visual connection to Country for the Tamworth community.
